Tell us a bit about you
I’m Mays, founder of Thriftly. I am a quality specialist by day and creative by night. My family immigrated to NZ from Iraq when I was 2 years old and we’ve called it home ever since. I am currently building a tiny house on wheels for myself and writing a children’s book on the side of my full time job and small business.
What are your hobbies and interests
I enjoy cooking and hosting dinner parties for friends. I have a passion for interior design and living simply which is what has led me to build a tiny house. I also am aware of environmental issues our world is facing and incorporate that consciousness into my life and business.
Tell me a bit about your business
Thriftly was developed from a love of interior design, second hand shopping, and an eco-initiative. I have helped my friends revive their spaces for years by making the most of what they have, finding new and used pieces at great prices, and my creative vision!
My last makeover for a friend was in December 2020, where I made over her living area whilst I was over for dinner. She reiterated what I had been hearing for years which is to start a business, and so I did just that. Thriftly offers room makeover services in ‘D.I.Y’ packages, where I design a space and mood board and give step by step instructions to make it over yourself, or a ‘Get Help’ package where I come and do everything myself! I also upcycle furniture and home decor items which I sell on my social media platforms.
What motivated you to get started
I needed creative fulfilment in my life and Thriftly has provided a channel to focus my creative energy in. I am also a fiercely independent woman and once I set my mind to something, nothing much can stop me! I hope this business will serve people in giving new life to homes that they can be proud of, and to encourage reusing what you have rather than buying new.
How long has it been around
I created Thriftly in December of 2020 and have been building my professional portfolio since then.
